HE MAKAHIKI MA KUALOA
He Makahiki ma Kualoa – 2006
December 7 to 10, 2006 Kualoa Regional Park, Oahu-Group Site
A collaboration of AHA KANE and Umi Kai, this Makahiki event is a follow-up workshop to the June AHA KANE held at Kamehameha Schools. Protocols, pule, oli and games will be discussed in open forums and demonstrated. The event is open to all, with preference to Native Hawaiians. Participation in the games, however, will be restricted to kane, 21 years or older. Each game participant is required to supply their own game implements (3-ihe, 2-ulumaika, 2 moa pahee) and their own malo. Coordinators of the event reserve the right to deny any person(s) from the camping and/or games. No alcohol, drugs or pets. All park regulations will be enforced. Event is free, no registration or camping fees. All meals and beverages are the responsibility of the campers/participants.
The kuleana of Hawaiian Kane today is the same kuleana as in kahiko times. He must be a provider—of food and shelter; protection; leadership—and an example. This event is being used as a vehicle to practice and develop these kuleana in a historical and meaningful manner, kuleana that carries responsibility for tomorrow.
